Leveraging Patient Insights for Deeper Engagement in the Rare Disease Space

In our new feature, “Bionews Insights,” we chat with thought leaders at Bionews. This month, we talked to Marcella Debidda, president of Bionews Clinical and Insights, about the power of patient-driven data and how Bionews is harnessing it to create impactful connections and solutions for the rare disease community.

Q1: Bionews has a long-standing commitment to understanding the specific needs of those living with rare diseases. How do patient insights play a crucial role in achieving this goal?

A: Digital data is the collective voice of patients. By listening to these voices through surveys, forums, and other channels, we gain invaluable insights into the challenges faced by individuals with rare diseases. Our recent surveys, which garnered more than 12,000 responses, provide a rich tapestry of experiences, from treatment decisions to daily struggles and media preferences, including key differences between male and female patients.

This data empowers us to identify key pain points and inform our strategies to better support the rare disease community. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about understanding the lived reality of patients and using that understanding to drive meaningful change.

Q2: Bionews has always been a bridge between patients and the healthcare ecosystem. How do patient insights facilitate this connection?

A: Patient insights serve as a vital bridge between patients and the healthcare ecosystem. By collecting and analyzing patient data, we gain a deeper understanding of their experiences, needs, and preferences. This information helps us to:

    • Inform pharmaceutical companies: We share our findings with pharmaceutical companies to help them develop more patient-centric therapies and accelerate the development of new treatments.
    • Educate healthcare providers: We provide healthcare providers with valuable insights that can enhance their understanding of patient perspectives and improve their ability to deliver more personalized care.
    • Support patients: We equip patients with information and resources to help them navigate their healthcare journey more effectively and advocate for their own needs.
    • Inform digital media agencies: Our data and insights can help digital media agencies develop more targeted and effective marketing strategies for reaching patients with rare diseases.

Q3: Beyond gathering insights, what other methods does Bionews use to better understand the patient-lived experience?

A: We believe direct connection with our community is essential for understanding the patient experience. In addition to data collection from surveys and website behaviors, we actively seek community feedback through polls, social media discussions, and open forums. This allows us to hear directly from patients and caregivers about their challenges, needs, and aspirations.

We also maintain a patient advisory board, which provides invaluable insights and helps us fine-tune our approach. By listening closely to the voices of our community, we can ensure our content and resources are relevant, compassionate, and tailored to their specific needs.

Q4: Data-driven storytelling is a core tenet of Bionews. How does it create deeper connections with the rare disease community?

A: While clinical textbooks offer medical guidance, patients and caregivers provide invaluable insights into the human experience of living with a rare disease. By combining data-driven insights with personal stories, we create content that resonates on a deeper level. Our data analysis provides a factual foundation, while human narratives bring the data to life, fostering a sense of understanding and connection within the rare disease community. This approach offers support to individuals navigating the challenges of living with a rare condition.

Q5: You’re also involved in a research project on gene-editing policies. Can you tell us more about this initiative and how it aligns with Bionews’ mission?

A: Bionews is partnering with a renowned academic health system on a research project supported by the NIH. This initiative seeks to incorporate patient perspectives into the therapeutic research process. We are serving as a virtual forum where researchers, policymakers, and patients can exchange ideas and contribute to discussions on crucial scientific topics related to gene editing.

I believe that all stakeholders, including patients, should have a voice in shaping research and policy decisions. This aligns perfectly with Bionews’ mission to empower patients and advocate for their needs. By involving patients in this project, we hope to ensure that gene-editing research and policies are developed with their perspectives and experiences in mind.

Thank you, Marcella, for your insights!
